Skills & Attributes

Overview

Characters possess twelve skills in total in the default game, and each of these sits within an attribute which, for players of Dungeons & Dragons are the equivalent of the ratings for saving throws. Each skill typically ranks from zero to three, and each rank adds one dice to any check using that skill.

Insight

The skills associated with the insight attribute are:

tend, which allows a character to address the needs of another by lending aid, comfort, or healing, whether psychological, biological, or medicinal.

hack, which allows breaching computer security systems or overriding their controls.

rig, which involves altering how an existing mechanism works, including repair, or creating a new one.

study, which involves the scrutiny of detail and the interpretation of evidence, gathering information from documents, newsfeeds and books.

Prowess

The skills associated with the prowess attribute are:

helm, which is the piloting of vehicles, or using vehicle weapons, jumping through hyperspace lanes, or rerouting power to other systems on a ship.

scramble, which represents the character's ability to lift, climb, jump, run or swim... usually away from, or into, trouble. It's for when you need to act fast.

scrap, which involves engaging in combat, whether hand-to-hand or ranged, with the intent to harm or neutralise an opponent.

skulk, which is moving stealthily or without notice, including acts of larceny, theft, or burglary.

Resolve

The skills associated with the resolve attribute are:

attune, which allows a character to connect with the Way, and open their mind to cosmic energies flowing through all existence, including the use of mysterious alien or precursor artefacts.

command, which allows a character to compel obedience through force of personality, intimidate, threaten. It is the use of presence in a forceful way.

consort, which involves socialising with friends, allies, and contacts, perhaps for gaining resources, information, assistance, access to particular places, or getting the word on the street.

sway, which allows a character to influence someone with guile, charm, or logic, including lying to them or arguing facts. It is the use of presence in a passive or manipulative way.

The number of skills for which a character has any rating other than zero counts toward their rank in that category.

So, for example, if a character has a rank of 1 in helm, a rank of 2 in scrap, and a rank of 1 in skulk, that gives them 3 skills out of the prowess category. So, when making any resistance rolls with prowess, they will roll 3 dice. Note that rank 2 and 3 don't affect the category rating; they will only increase the efficacy of the particular skill.

Important Note: skill and attribute ranks range from 1 to 3. Unless otherwise noted by an ability, no skill may normally advance past rank 3, nor any attribute (even if you have ranks in all four skills in that category).

Future Intent

For the skills, these would likely change in order to broaden the skillset for multiple “modes”. There would likely be more skills, (sixteen), and a fourth attribute. However, the basic mechanics of skill use would remain exactly the same.

It may also be necessary to remove the restriction on rank 3 as the maximum, depending on the strength of opposition and the larger number of skill points assigned in order to cover off the larger number of skills and attributes.
