Kashyyyk

FETID UNTAMED WORLD | OUTER RIM

Kashyyyk.png

Features

Remote. The Kassyyor system is a distant and largely insignificant system on the very edge between the Core Worlds and Outer Rim.

Wild Fauna. Sharing a great deal of similar fauna with its sister world of Hsskhor, Kashyyyk is similarly overrun by an impressive range of local fauna, much of which is very large and very dangerous.

Wroshyr Forests. Unlike Hsskhor, Kashyyyk is covered in the immense wroshyr trees, which frequently stand up to one kilometre tall and dominate all other natural features except its highest mountains. Almost all non-Wookiees on the planet have never actually seen the planet’s swamp-like surface, as its dark depths literally crawl with the planet’s most dangerous species.

Corporate Controlled. While not all Wookiees on Kashyyyk are slaves, those who live in the major urban centres most certainly are. These centres are strictly controlled by the Czerka Mercantile and their Trandoshan mercenaries. The planet is known as Edean to Czerka executives and its shareholders. The Wookiees no longer retain any control of their own planet, except in remote and hidden enclaves in the deeper regions of the forests.

Locations

Rwookor. The planet’s traditional capital city is, like most other Wookiee urban centres, built well above the depths of the planet’s surface, within the verdant canopy of the wroshyr forests and within range of light. It has been assembled over centuries first with wood—which still makes up much of its structures—and later with lighter plasteel materials, particularly in regions constructed by human and Trandoshan interlopers.

Edean City. The new “capital” city, has been constructed in the midst of a drained swamp on the planet’s equator and one of the few regions almost completely free of wroshyr trees. This squat and walled urban centre is constructed with hardy durasteel and hosts a large number of starports, from where the planet’s primary industry—slavery—is served.

History

The history of the homeworld of the Wookiees is littered with attempts to turn their famous strength to the benefit of governmental or corporate interests, most of which have been successful. In the early days of the Old Republic, the planet and its occupants were largely ignored, or left to their own devices. It was not until Trandoshans began raiding the planet for slaves to sell on galactic black markets that the galaxy at large was introduced to Wookiees as a species.

The proximity of Hsskhor to Kashyyyk is widely seen as the reason for the misery of the Wookiees, as they quickly became known as valuable commodities, particularly in regard to manual labour. The source of this species was rarely questioned, and the single Senate enquiry into the nature of Wookiees and their seemingly perpetual state of slavery was swiftly buried beneath the weight of extensive oversight and a narrowing of terms, before it was eventually abandoned.

By this time, Czerka Mercantile had taken an interest not only in Kashyyyk but also its sister-planet, Hsskhor. Through a careful manipulation of the aggressive Trandoshan people, they gradually took control of many of Hsskhor’s bureaucratic and economic functions, leaving the native reptilian species to their fanatically religious “hunts”, many of which came to involve poaching Wookiee slaves from Kashyyyk as a rite of passage. Eventually, even Hsskhor itself would fall beneath the corporate glove of Czerka, its citizens becoming slavers and mercenaries for the company, in exchange for a discreet deference to the religious norms of their culture.

The Wookiees, for their part, resisted these encroachments form the beginning. Despite corporate propaganda renaming the planet from its native Kashyyyk to the more easily marketable ‘Edean’, the Wookiees never made their pacification easy—nor has the planet ever truly been understood to have been “pacified” at all. For the entirety of its existence as a target for the slave trade, Kashyyyk has been a bloody and violent planet. Even since the rise of the Galactic Empire, the local Wookiees still attack, raid, and harass the slavers, all of whom have understood for centuries what the cost of encroachment on the world really means. It has become a dangerous rite of passage for the Trandoshans for a reason; it is no easy task.

Phenomena

A standard day on Kashyyyk lasts a little over thirty two standard hours, and the length of its solar year is three hundred and seventy two local days.

The planet’s vast array of flora and fauna is mostly unknown, being located well below the upper regions where most urban centres are to be found. Almost all explorations to the lower levels of the planet have met with failure, and even remote probes have failed to do little more than scan the lower levels of the forest. It is presumed the planet’s surface is a sludgy swamp—only because other, more sparsely forested regions have been surveyed.
