Oku-Kei

VOLCANIC SHATTERED WORLD | OUTER RIM

Features

Hyperlane. Oku-Kei and its system fall along the Carex Lane, an important trade run along the outskirts of the Core Worlds.

Kalaxium. A planet ravaged by tectonic rupturing, Oku-Kei would likely never have appeared as more than a footnote in the most mundane of galactic records had the orbital scan which first identified the planet also detected massive deposits of the incredibly rare mineral Kalaxium.

Smuggling Run. Thanks largely to the political problems on the planet, Oku-Kei is rife with smuggling activity, as all manner of scoundrels have taken to exploiting the corporate conflict for their own ends. To what degree this is actually encouraged by the weaker corporations is unknown.

Corporate Controlled. Thanks the discovery of Kalaxium on the planet, Oku-Kei was quickly descended upon by a variety of corporate interests, including most prominently the Hapax Corporation, Industrial Automaton, and LithoCorp, all of whom vie for control of the planet. It has always been a litigious battleground between these various corporate interests, who have engaged in even more vicious competition in the Galactic Senate in order to attain exclusive mining rights.

Type II Atmosphere. While it is possible for some species to breathe for short periods of time on the planet’s surface, the vast majority of carbon based life forms will begin to suffocate and suffer extreme physical degradation without rebreathers or even fully enclosed exo-suits. Furthermore, the planet’s dust-filled atmosphere restricts visibility, and the planet is, evidently, little more than endless basalt plains and gigantic volcanoes, all of which frequently crack and fissure the surface. More than one mining base has been completely and suddenly consumed by these terrible physical forces.

Locations

Kalax Prime. The very first corporation to establish a base on Oku-Kei was LithoCorp, who sought to stabilise the planet in order to maximise the profitability of their operations there. However, such efforts have been largely fruitless given the fluid nature of Kalaxium and the need to maintain the planet’s instability in order to effectively mine the material. The aptly-named Kalax Prime is registered as a “civilian domicile” in most galactic records, however it is a thinly disguised corporate mining outfit with little other purpose.

Kalax Secundus. Little spoken-of is LithoCorp’s second settlement on the planet, which essentially mirrored the first after its initial success. However, ten years into its development, a gigantic fissure nearby cracked the foundations of the mining operation, and not long after the majority of it sank into what were then several lava pits. These have since solidified, leaving the half-consumed husk of Kalax Secundus buried in basalt.

Phenomena

A standard day on Oku-Kei lasts sixty-four hours, and the length of its year is one hundred and four local days.

Native flora and fauna are extremely rare, usually found only at microbial levels.
