There’s so much gold: in the decor (which are not coincidentally like prison bars), the frame of the mirror, Bateman’s cufflinks and arguably even his tie. A colour almost universally associated with wealth. Yet, figuratively, the focus here is on hands, and touch: the taps and hand towel and Bateman’s own gloves; each of them focused on hygiene or the desire to mitigate or ameliorate touch, or the various problems associated with what touch might imply. The towel dispenser is mirrored here, for emphasis, and is literally in the centre of the frame. All of which is appropriate given the nature of a scene about misunderstood homoerotic desire. I’ve often wondered: Bateman is clearly repulsed by Luis, but instead of turning to homicidal violence as he might with a woman, he is reduced to impotent babbling (and yet another flaccid “I have to return some videotapes”) by the romantic overtures of another man. Doesn’t sound like much of a psycho to me, just someone inured by their culture to be repulsed by same-sex desire, and perhaps even confused about his own feelings. This is a creature who has assaulted and murdered his way through her entire life and the lives of everyone in his vicinity. Why, why, why would we expect she would give the slightest shit about him? We don’t. Or, at least, shouldn’t. The shot very heavily suggests the gruesome splatter of their intercourse, contrasted with not just the white linen bedsheets but the sudden and incomprehensible addition of dried flowers, romanticising this act of sexual assault. If there’s any doubt about this, just imagine what the scene will look like when they lift the vampire’s corpse from atop Ellen’s own deceased body. That’s right; he killed her during their little romantic tryst. It’s not like Orlok was some unfairly maligned, socially ostracised victim, come in for a cuddle after he was lured by those who feared him, to be destroyed by an incidental allergy to light; and the female protagonist was the only person who truly understood him, or something. No, this was a brutal, butchering rapist who savaged anyone he pleased—entire cities if it suited his whims. Apparently, a fleeting few seconds of a more than two-hour film is enough for us to suddenly think, “oh, how sweet… that’s a little bit romantic.” There’s nothing idyllic about this film at all, and its attempts to bait and switch sexual assault for romance would be laughable if they were not so despicable. Ironically, with its high contrast lighting and framing, this image is quite a bit more effective than a great many shots in the film. It irritates me having to critique this kind of shit because it makes me feel like some ancient prude; but there’s a difference between eroticism and the factors underlying modern obsessions with asphyxiation during sex. Nosferatu extols this type of sexual behaviour in an almost offhand or casual way, even when it’s non-consensual. I mean, does Ellen look like she is having fun here? If not, then what’s the commentary being made? That she might wake up and feel like she actually enjoyed it? The film infers as much, given Ellen’s conflicted reflections on her prior encounters with Orlok. Why include it—other than for the gratification, or to pique the interest, of younger audience members who, perversely, don’t know any better. Is that what this is supposed to represent—ignorance? Are women really so deprived of agency in intimate situations now that being strangled is one of the few ways they might tolerate or endure sexual encounters with men? Has it reached the point where being rendered semi-conscious is the answer? If you’ve been taught that disassociation is as close to pleasure as you’re likely to experience, perhaps a scene like this might actually seem sexy. And are men really so insecure that the only way they can enjoy sex is to enact fantasies of power and violence upon their partners? These are legitimate questions because many cultural artefacts, this film included, seem to be saying: well, duh. There’s a time and place for all sorts of kink, which are really important outlets for expression, especially as means of recovering from trauma, but ‘women being strangled’ (not choked; that’s what food does inside your throat, not a hand from the outside) in my view has moved beyond reframing, reclamation, or growth—it has become a trope embedded within contemporary sexual interaction generally. But it is bereft of intimacy or connection in many, many cases. That it is so explicitly used here is another example of the film’s disinterest in challenging the nature of its subject matter (in this case, the “horror” of sexual assault), which leads the film instead to actively indulge its most problematic tendencies. In other words, because Eggers doesn’t have anything meaningful to say about it, by so prominently romanticising this and other forms of sexualised violence, he has become part of the problem. No surprises there, perhaps. The brand intends, quite cynically, to spruik its female-empowerment credentials, and would know darn well that the vast majority of men won’t cast a second glance at a row of lipsticks which are far larger, you’ll notice, than any of the text. One can barely read the “hire more women in leadership roles” line; it’s hardly shouting it from the rooftops. That’s completely conscious. The intent is for women to see it, read it, do an internalised fist-pump for the sisters and feel one of a number of feelings: perhaps a vaguely smug satisfaction; a sense of reassurance; or, simply a cozy warm sensation. Each of which will later be associated with the brand itself. Which, you’ll note is not just beneath the ad, but chiselled into the lipstick drum as well as printed on the lipstick itself. There’s absolutely no chance you’re looking at this without gaining some kind of subliminal imprint from the ubiquitous branding. Who, of course, are just as susceptible to the many variegations of marketing which exploit base insecurities. Appear this way, by behaving this way, by dressing this way, and that shall bequeath you the status you desire (and, by contrast and logical inference, currently lack). Women are told to fear their lack of youthfulness; men are told to fear their lack of power. Ergo, a common difference between male and female advertising is an active rather than passive role, dominance rather than submission; most other tropes fit just as well into both. Unfulfilled desire, and the fantasy of feeling a particular way. In this particular image, “powerful” is the fantasy, and just as importantly, “emotionless”—in the mind of many men, one and the same. Dolce & Gabbana, in their choice to display such provocative imagery, seemingly suggest it’s their attitude rather than their actual clothes which is worth emulating. Otherwise, the clothing would be what the image might actually be about. In this example they resort to the most sterile stereotypes of masculine power in order to sell their shirts to men for whom the appearance of power is more important than the appearance of style. Their shirts, perhaps unsurprisingly, are aesthetically awful, stylistically bungled clutter—and perhaps why two out of the four male models here aren’t even wearing them. This particular stylised rape is one among many D&G offerings—the brand is among the very worst offenders among the supposedly “haute” variety of couture in terms of scraping out harmfully puerile symbolism. Not to mention their habit of just overcooking their message by dialling a particular style up to the hypothetical 11. This ad reveals quite a bit about D&G’s own insecurity as a brand, via their need to reach well beyond clothing style itself in order to stand out. If their clothes were amazing, they wouldn’t need to stamp and scream and throw a visual tantrum. You’d never see an ad like this by Dior, because they actually design great clothes. As it does here, in a still from an ad featuring a young boy who represents, quite literally, the male gaze in action. He playfully waves a magnifying glass around so that the mother-coded female character can be examined through that very lens. Note that she isn’t actually meant to be a mother (she seems much too carefree for that, and could just as easily be, say, an aunt); the child is there to help mothers identify with the model. They are the target audience. Also, think about why that isn’t a little girl pushing a magnifying glass in her mother’s face, checking out all the pores digitally removed from beneath her insightful stare. Is it the boy-toddler getting a faux-parental instruction here, or is it we as viewers being educated? The entire ad is so incredibly soft-focus that everything comes off with an ethereal, fuzzy glow, largely invalidating the effort of the boy’s inquisitive inspection (a magnified cheek passes distinctly across our own gaze via the framing of the scene). It’s almost as though, oh, I don’t know… the ad is cheating in a way that a real person could not. Symbolically it remains a powerful representation of the process this industry wants—literally, needs—women to employ upon themselves if they are to keep selling all this crap in the volumes and at the price-points they do. That is, to self-interrogate from the position of a male gaze. Even an infant one. The use of light and focus to draw attention to specific features such as the eyes and the gloss of the lips, and the softening of literally every other feature grants this image a sense of “perfection”, if by that we are to expect a lack of flaws. This model—if she is someone significant outside of the fashion world, I’m unaware of it—is clearly already a very attractive person, but the ad goes to great lengths to make sure that even someone such as she is so heavily modified as to make the very image of her even more un-real. Not to mention that this ad flashes statements like “flawless skin”, “air whipped” (whatever the hell that means), “100% poreless” (if we are to ignore biological reality), across images of blue skies, fluttering scarves and, of course, airbrushed female faces. Then—the pièce de résistance—the bold “prove it”! Wow… are we getting scientific here? Challenge accepted! Yet, if it’s unreadable in the image above, that’s on purpose: that tiny little line of text along her jawline says “based on consumer testing”. A golf-ball covered in this goop is meant to express some kind of “we’re dumbing it down for you” laboratory testing process, one presumes; an hilariously clumsy (yet depressingly common) appeal-to-authority. I wonder if by “proof”, they mean “some people we asked said so”. People who, for all we know, may well be employees—who can of course also be “consumers” if they have used the product. In other words, there’s no actual connection between statement and fact here, only a symbolic one. It must have been a particularly great time to be an in-demand artist or athlete. You might not recognise her underneath all that make-up and behind the too-good-to-be-true, saccharine 50s smile, but that’s Kristin Davis of Sex and the City you’re looking at there. She was likely chosen as the most “classically” pretty of all four—though if they’d been selling pure sexual allure or confidence, then Kim Cattrall would have been a much better choice. But the classical appearance is important—as it is, was, and probably will ever be with makeup—because this is a fundamentally nostalgic advertisement. Beyond some quite obvious oral fixations for lipstick, makeup in general doesn’t tend to overdo sexual overtones, perhaps given that sex tends to be fashion’s schtick: underwear in particular (given its proximity to genitals, I guess). This is also the era when we saw the introduction of the now-ubiquitous association of Maybelline with the undeniably catchy tag, “maybe she was born with it—maybe it’s Maybelline”. Of course, if she’s in the ad she probably is born with it, and even then it’s been artificially accentuated for her; otherwise it’s almost always Maybelline. It is now something of an anachronism to see even the very small smile lines they’ve left beside Davis’ eyes here; perhaps the notion that this is a supposedly recognisable celebrity meant that there was a risk that, if they altered the image too much, her face may have become homogenous—thereby invalidating all the money they paid to have Davis specifically there in the first place. Note the supremely ironic “extreme warning! May cause excessive joy”. Settle down on the fucking hyperbole there. But I suppose people believe what they want to believe; if you’re wearing this and not feeling excessive joy… I guess that’s on you, yeah? I mean, if Kristin Davis is happy in this most natural of poses, then anyone with this shit slapped on their lips should be, too. Note also the untestable bottom line; “preferred by smart women the world over”. And you’re not an idiot now, are you? This is basically a form of operant conditioning in which, by preferring (and, therefore, likely consuming) the product, you avoid a negative stimuli—in this case, being excluded from the group of “smart women the world over”. And so we see the progressive notion of sexual freedom expressed in the sales pitch itself. Don’t constrain yourself to one man, ladies! How 1960s. Just make sure you can have your pick by ensuring you have the right lip gloss for the occasion. That’s an appeal to status; after all, women with high status have the broadest range of male partner choices, but to do so they need to maintain that status. Which requires them to be looked at by, you guessed it… men. Lip gloss, incidentally, is a classic example of an utterly unnecessary accoutrement—variously marketed as some kind of “moisturiser” for the lips (did “chapped” lips exist before lip gloss, which arguably exacerbates, or possibly even causes, such “chapping” as much as it prevents it?), or as a more subtle replacement for a more old-fashioned, garish lipstick. Or, as the ad suggests, you can have both. We sell both, by the way! Why not spoil yourself? When appeals to status fail, there’s always the temptation of a luxurious indulgence. The bland pastel variegation holds the same ageing, tepid tedium which has come to dominate the Democratic Party he so appropriately represents. Obsessively safe, staring right into the centre of the frame, Biden might hope against hope that these same dull patterns will repeat themselves as they always have done—only, this time there’s a degree of delusion which cannot be overlooked. What is not in the frame might be as significant as what is. Can his son, doing his best impression of his father and representing the future of US politics with his gaze facing further forward than that of his father, really prevail over the unseen shadow which will soon cast its long reach across this otherwise naive and glowing appraisal of what is to come? One wonders what it is they see in the patterns before them, losing nuance in their desire to move backward into the larger, lighter field on the left, than toward the more fractured, darker actuality expressed on the right. One is the past, one the future; will the next block of colour be shades of grey, or black, or splattered with some other bright colour as the country is further eviscerated? The model’s hair is another fine expression of contrast within the mise-en-scène of this photograph. Say what you will about the underlying process, most people would rightly be pretty happy to have taken this on their phone. The awkward Dalmatian, however, is a complete mistake (other than its thematic necessity, in comparison with its twin and, presumably, other similar ads in the series). Unusually, the fluffy, Ewok-looking handbag-mutt in the earlier image is better suited to this than the clearly distracted canine leashed literally at its faux-mistress’s feet. You know what they say: don’t work with children or animals. This is why. Very post-postmodern. It hasn’t lost all semiotic meaning, though; the simulacra of money and data have merely replaced literal meaning, not unlike the way the digital revolution has irrevocably altered the way most human minds consume and interpret information, and the meaning derived from it. Remember, data on a tape (or on a disc or in a computer or phone) is useless without the means of decoding it, and has ceased to be “information” per se. It is information one step removed. The same with money: it has no inherent “worth” as an actual object—it only has value once it is agreed to as a unit of common trade. We forget, in the modern world, how many things with semiotic meaning have no literal meaning; to test this, just remove their context. As an example, imagine receiving a foreign currency without the means to exchange it—would the physical notes or coinage be “worth” anything to you if nobody else accepted it as legal tender? Ergo, it is a simulacra of “value”, holding no inherent worth unto itself and no longer representing anything real—only a culturally agreed-upon rate for economic exchange. Without the cultural context, therefore, it loses literal meaning altogether. Amusingly, the remaining “text” left within the mutilated book is entitled “on nihilism”, literally (and I mean that in at least two different ways) reflecting the destruction or disappearance of the meaning once held within, but hollowed out… leaving only the simulated shell. It reveals echoes of the classical cinéma vérité style of the 1960s, in contrast to a more expressionistic or artfully constructed style. Ironically it draws attention to the act of photography rather than the art of photography, and so is one step removed from the notion of capturing “truth” or “reality” as a purist vérité style would. While there are ostensibly only two people in the shot, the reflections form a sense of alternative possibilities, whether different life paths, or different ways of Being—what the philosopher Martin Heidegger referred to as dasein—or even that these two figures might represent a limitless number of other iterations. Versions of people like, or unlike, themselves: doing little more than enduring their existence; seeking affirmation or solace; remaining constrained by the same soulless edifice; struggling. Not to mention that the mirror-image offers an illusory sense of transportation, in yet another potential meaning for the ubiquitous reflective surfaces. The infinity mirror in this specific shot causes the repeated reflections to disappear into darkness. Which is a fairly mundane feature of such mirrors, certainly, but also a sublimely appropriate semiotic representation of the film’s most powerful motif. Also, just from a purely technical perspective, remember that there should be a huge camera setup and a whole crew reflected in that same mirror, so there are editorial artifices here so skilfully hidden as to render them not even worth considering—maintaining a suspension of disbelief and an immersion in the story and its characters. It’s special effects as a means-to-an-end, rather than an end unto itself. This is perhaps the strongest thematic suggestion that Adam is, in fact, the only living being in the film; it also invites his being the figure through which warmth—perhaps even the concept of love itself—is interpreted, or the dark and cold transfigured into heat and light. He, in this reading, is the source of life around which the dead congregate. Though, on the other hand, it is worth pondering the notion that the inciting event was not the alarm per se, but in fact the evacuation which followed it. It is Adam’s lonely appearance at the (ironic) gathering point, looking up longingly at Harry (though we don’t know who he is yet), who is inexplicably still in the building and in no apparent rush to leave despite the supposed alarm, which presages this taut and uncomfortable interaction. There’s a soft-focus lens on the camera here as well, lending it an almost cheesy, ‘80s midday-movie vibe. The scene looks warm and fuzzy… but of course it isn’t that simple. Nothing in the film is. Note the difference in the colour grading between this shot and, say, the one in the elevator—fluorescent, cold, and emotionally barren.
