Narolax II

FROZEN FERAL WORLD | OUTER RIM

Features

Monitored. Given its status as an Imperial Military Research Centre, Narolax II is constantly monitored by the Galactic Empire, and is frequently guarded by capital-class blockades.

Remote. The frozen world is outside the typical Imperial sphere of influence, being located in a remote corner of the Outer Rim. While not as distant as other parts of the Outer Rim it is nevertheless an unusual location for such facilities.

Liquid Quadrinix. The planet holds significant deposits of Liquid Quadrinix, the vast majority of which are yet to be tapped. A running joke among the Imperial engineers on the planet is that it actually exports the unique ‘frozen Quadrinix’. Given that the frozen state of Quadrinix requires huge amounts of energy to reproduce artificially, some surmise this could be quite beneficial if properly explored.

Imperial Controlled. The Empire makes no secret of its complete control of the world, which it maintains almost exclusively via brute military power. The planet’s extremely sparse population is concentrated on a number of heavily fortified research facilities on the surface. The military forces are commanded by a combination of standard army regiments, which until recently were led by Commander Fosk, which reports to the Imperial Navy, led by Commodore Muur, which in turn report to the Imperial Security Bureau, led by an unknown agent. This unusual military hierarchy causes a great deal of friction amongst the leaders of these distinct branches.

Pirate Enclave. Unverified reports suggest that a group of pirates have managed to maintain a base of operations hidden on the planet right under the nose of the Imperial garrison. Many experts refute this, claiming it would be impossible for such a group to remain completely undetected, much less to operate with any kind of efficiency in the presence of a classified Imperial research installation. The frequency of Imperial patrols, often including multiple Star Destroyers, above the planet add to the attitude of disdain shown toward such rumours.

Locations

Research Centre Aurek. The primary facility on the planet appears to be a large singular tower. However, most of its volume lies beneath the surface, and the tower itself is simply necessary for communications and also for smaller vehicles to dock for short periods of time.

History

The Narolax system was colonised several decades prior to the beginning of the First Clone War, but by the end of the conflict its population had dwindled and the colony itself was largely abandoned. One of the reasons for the failure of the colony was the large variety of unusually aggressive native fauna, including what appeared to be a primitive but sapient indigenous species. Neither tamed nor integrated into the colonial system, reports of the natives mentioned little in regard to their inherent nature nor their culture.

Known as the Crypt by its more contemporary Imperial overseers, the planet is notorious for its unforgiving temperatures, and the engines of starships even as large as Imperial-class Star Destroyers have been known to fail in low orbit, literally freezing over with such swiftness that entire freighters can be swallowed by frost dunes in a matter of hours. Imperial assignments to the planet are known to be quite prestigious among those who have never been there. Ultimately, however, its far-flung location and perilous conditions make it undeniably punishing.

Phenomena

A standard day on Narolax II lasts fourteen standard hours, and the length of its incredibly long year is seventeen thousand, four hundred, and eight local days.

Native fauna includes the siskyss—or snow-snake—lethiyl worms, and frysticors. Tauntauns are an introduced species, but have flourished in some regions, occasionally hunted by colonists or the native species.
