Kerelos IV

TERRESTRIAL COLONY WORLD | CORE WORLDS

Features

Colonial Intrusion. Initially colonised simply as a mining world, Kerelos began to draw a great deal of trade from across Imperial space, and developed a diversity of flourishing markets. However, the Imperial citizens living on the world have ostracised and neglected the native inhabitants, with whom they have signed a limited “treaty of understanding”.

Smuggling Run. Under the cover of political instability, the guilds have been said to encourage smugglers as another way of resisting corporate interference in their affairs.

Mining. After the discovery of plastrex in vast quantities in various regions across the planet, Kerelos was surveyed by the Imperial Reclamation Division and flagged for settlement. Now, vast quantities of the minerals are regularly shipped to and from the planet.

Impenetrable Swamps. Much of the lowland terrain of the planet are marshy swamps and fens, impossible to traverse by normal means, and largely ignored by the populace. Almost entirely unmapped, these swamps cover vast swathes of territory, and are the preferred habitat of the native Kessku.

Affluent. Whilst technically Kerelos is a planet flush with credits, the discrepancy between the wealthy and the poor is extreme, with labour unions constantly pushing against corporate regimes with little success. As a consequence, Kerelos has also developed a thriving underworld, closely linked with the mining unions in particular.

The Guilds. Several guilds have taken a stranglehold of the planet’s labour, and have prospered thanks to their domination of the mining industries. The miners themselves find the guilds frustrating because they have become rife with graft and self-serving political machinations. While strikes are common, and some guild members are extraordinarily wealthy, they have not significantly improved the lot of the average miner.

Imperial aligned. Kerelos is held in the grip of Imperial power by brute force. It has a formidable garrison, which is frequently required to maintain order during the many strikes which occur, and stifle unrest. The local military often engages in open battle with forces of the underworld out in the open, as they struggle for control over sections of the capital.

Locations

Kerella. The capital city of Kerelos, this one gigantic settlement makes up the vast majority of Imperial presence on the planet. As the sole starport—other than a few ramshackle, dusty landing pads in the smaller outposts—Kerella dominates the planet’s trade, and is controlled by an Imperial governor. The garrison has been deployed within the city’s central district, and the squat, heavily fortified complex spreads across whole blocks of the city.

The Puddle. One of the many impenetrable swamps strewn across the planet, one notable lowland fen stretches around one entire flank of the spaceport city of Kerella. While various efforts have been made to strip the Puddle of vegetation, nothing seems to be able to drain the underlying sludge; in response, civil engineers and local geologists have simply ignored the problem and the city has largely spread its growth in the opposite direction. The Puddle is home to many of the Kessku, the local inhabitants of the planet.

Phenomena

A standard day on Basus lasts thirty-three standard hours, and the length of its solar year is one hundred and seven local days.

Native flora is diverse, fertile and hardy, spreading wherever it can get a foothold. Even within the cities small vines and even gnarled trees will gain a grip on some crack in a plascrete structure and find some shred of nutrient to feed on.

The planet’s fauna is diverse, but mostly limited to the swamplands, with the exception of some large avian species and a number of ungulates which wander the plains and have been converted into beasts of burden by both the local Kessku as well as Imperial miners.
